“Digital Hollywood North”: OCRIRadio.com Explores Ottawa’s Contributions to Big Screen Blockbusters and Blockbuster Games
XYZRGB conquers King Kong pixel by pixel while Algonquin College exports special effects and animation talent to India and China
Ottawa, Oct. 31, 2006 – Blockbuster movies like King Kong, The Lord of The Rings and The Matrix either rely heavily on digital effects, digital animation or even digital stars to get people into theatres. But despite the digital push at movie studios, the worldwide video game industry overtook movie box-office receipts in 2004 with sales of $24.5 billion U.S., and sales are expected to soar to $55 billion by 2008. Join OCRIRadio.com co-hosts Jeffrey Dale, President and CEO of OCRI, and Nathan Rudyk, President of market2world communications inc. as they talk to two “Digital Hollywood North” leaders to discover how Ottawa is getting its piece of the pixelated action.
Dale and Rudyk interview Jan-Erik Nyhuus, Vice President of Business Development of XYZRGB Corp. Born from the labs of the National Research Council, XYZRGB creates 3-D digital scans of rock stars like Bono, sports stars like Tiger Woods and Hollywood stars like King Kong for both the gaming and movie industries. Nyhuus also offers a true Hollywood perspective based on the 12 years he spent working at Universal Studios on movie and TV shows like Jaws, Midway, MacArthur and Charlie’s Angels.
Dale and Rudyk also interview Russ Mills, former President of the Southam Newspaper Group and Publisher of the Ottawa Citizen, and now Dean of the School of Media and Design at Algonquin College. Mills discusses Algonquin’s gaming and multimedia programs, who’s hiring his grads, and how Algonquin’s multimedia expertise has found its way not only to California, but also all the way to China and India.
The hour-long October podcast of OCRIRadio.com concludes with Kathy McKinlay, OCRI’s Executive Director of Education and Research, who discusses how OCRI is working to get students interested in the many fascinating careers in today’s multimedia and I.T. universe.
Past guests on OCRIRadio.com include Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer; Ventures West President Ted Anderson; and University of Ottawa copyright law professor and blogger Michael Geist.
