OCRIRadio Celebrates One Year of Life
with a ‘Life Sciences’ Podcast that Profiles
Two Ottawa Companies Fighting Heart Disease
Liponex works on new drug that increases good cholesterol, while Stempath develops therapy that regenerates damaged heart cells
Ottawa, November 16, 2006 – OCRIRadio.com celebrated one year of life on the Internet airwaves today, launching a November podcast celebrating Ottawa’s life sciences sector. Co-hosts Jeffrey Dale, President and CEO of OCRI, and Nathan Rudyk, President of market2world communications inc. survey the life sciences sector in Ottawa and discover that promising heart disease drugs from two local life sciences companies are a solid indicator of success to follow.
Ageing baby boomers, a stressed health care system and virulent new diseases that are immune to traditional therapies are creating billion-dollar opportunities in the life sciences field. This month, OCRIRadio.com’s co-hosts interview two executives from Ottawa’s life sciences community – Bill Dickie, CEO of Liponex Inc., and Jan Alfheim, President of StemPath.
Liponex was named Company of the Year at the Ottawa Life Sciences Council (OLSC) Achievement Awards in September, for its rapid success in developing a unique product designed to treat and prevent heart disease – the number one killer in the developed world. Liponex’s ‘CRD5’ is the only known developmental drug that increases good cholesterol (HDL). Early tests suggest it may also reduce bad cholesterol.
A spin-off of the Ottawa Health Research Institute in 2003, StemPath focuses on the regenerative power of stem cells - the ’master cells’ that provide the starting material for every organ and tissue in the body. StemPath aims to become the first pharmaceutical company specializing in therapeutic solutions that modulate the body' s natural regenerative capacity - replacing damaged tissues with new tissues.
Rudyk and Dale also speak with Ken Lawless, President of the OLSC, and Vice President of OCRI’s Life Sciences Program. He previews next week’s blockbuster life sciences conference, BioNorth (Nov 20-21) and discusses the synergies between Ottawa’s life sciences and information technology sectors.
Past guests on OCRIRadio.com include Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer; Ventures West President Ted Anderson; and University of Ottawa copyright law Professor and blogger Michael Geist.
