OCRIRadio.com Podcast Explores Ottawa’s Intent to Stake its Claim as Canada’s Clean Energy Capital
Rod Bryden’s Plasco Energy Group and Chris Henderson’s Lumos Energy championing clean technologies as global warming demands new energy sources
Ottawa ON, February 28, 2007 – Ottawa’s history of harnessing wood and water resources to create energy has inspired a new generation of entrepreneurs seeking alternative sources of energy from wind, water, solar, and biofuels, as well as new ways to help change our patterns of consumption - up to and including turning our garbage into electricity. On the February podcast of OCRIRadio.com, Jeffrey Dale, President and CEO of OCRI, and Nathan Rudyk, President of market2world communications inc. talk to two entrepreneurs working to put the green into clean energy.
The green includes financial rewards for companies that can come up with viable environmental solutions. As global warming becomes an accepted scientific fact and politicians jockey to jump on concern for the environment, U.S. clean technology investments soared by more than 50 percent in the first three quarters of last year. Venture capital investment giant Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers has announced a doubling of its renewable-energy fund to $200 million, with Kleiner partner Ray Lane stating to the Wall Street Journal that clean tech will be "bigger than the Internet, by an order of magnitude."
The numbers are painting a green picture in Ottawa as well. OCRIRadio.com guest and Ottawa entrepreneurial legend Rod Bryden raised $25 million in two rounds last year for his newest venture, Plasco Energy Group. As the City of Ottawa engages in a dispute with the owners of the Carp Road Landfill – dubbed ’Mount Trashmore‘ by neighbouring residents – over trying to triple the size of that site, Mayor Larry O’Brien has declared a "war on landfills".
Plasco Energy Group builds and markets technology that dovetails with the City’s waste management agenda. Soon to be in operation at a demonstration plant located at Ottawa’s Trial Road Landfill, the patented Plasco Conversion System uses plasma arc technology to turn garbage into electric power.
The second guest on the February podcast of OCRIRadio.com is Chris Henderson, Chairman of The Delphi Group, and President of environmental technology consulting firm Lumos Energy. Henderson is spearheading the new Ottawa Clean Energy Cluster that includes companies such as Menova Energy Inc., Triacta Power Technologies Inc., Vector Wind Energy Inc., and Brascan Power. He believes that potential exists to stake Ottawa’s claim as the clean energy capital of Canada.
Rudyk and Dale also speak to Kathy Mahoney, OCRI’s Vice President of Corporate Events, on the upcoming OCRI Technology Showcase and the finalists for the 2007 OCRI Awards.
Past guests on OCRIRadio.com include Microsoft Corp. CEO Steve Ballmer; Ventures West President Ted Anderson; and University of Ottawa copyright law Professor and blogger Michael Geist.
